The Rise of Communal Spaces in Hotels


As Multibriefs.com points out, the rise of platforms like Airbnb have forced the hotel industry to rethink exactly how they operate. Millennial consumer demands are trending to more communal spaces, living rooms” if you will, and the hotel industry is obliging by creating smaller more cozy rooms, with larger more inviting common areas. 

The millennial generation, tapping in at roughly 92 million Americans, have expressed a desire to be connected and to connect, while expressing a desire for a "home away from home" experience. Innovating in this realm are brands like Yotel, Hilton, Best Western and the IHG brands, creating smaller cabins” or crash pads” as opposed the generic bland hotel rooms we’ve all had to suffer through.

Common areas in these hotels vary from nightclub-like settings to a more cozy and casual ambiance, aimed purposefully at making guests feel like they are in a friend’s living room rather than a hotel. 

If we’re being completely honest, we love this! In an age where its easy to write off millennials as phone absorbed workaholics, the shift from more isolated environments to something more communal opens up a multitude of possibilities for businesses. It’s also perhaps a healthier, more productive lifestyle choice to offer guests.
