H.I: Hospitality Intelligence

In a rapidly evolving technological world, the latest gadgets and apps are all the craze. Anything that makes life easier is valued and coveted. The same can be said about hospitality technology. Years ago, just having a TV with HBO was considered a hotel luxury. Now, with technology growing so fast and with more capabilities than ever, the hospitality industry needs to keep up. And with the advent of virtual assistants such as Siri, Google Now, Alexa, and Cortana with Microsoft, the hospitality world is seeing perhaps the next stage in customer service.

One of the biggest trends with retail consumers are in-home personal assistance. Alexa and Google have been designed to integrate with every function of your home. Turning on lights, controlling electronics, and even informing you about diagnostics with your car. So, it’s no wonder hotels have started catching on.

Recently, in an article by Hospitality Upgrade, they reported that Aloft Hotels has debuted voice controlled rooms where customers can control temperature, their TV, and light settings. However, this is something that already exists, Virtual Assistance. What would in-room Artificial Intelligence look like in the future?

Starwood Hotels for instance, have been experimenting with the idea of rooms “paying attention” to the user’s habits. Instead of constantly telling the virtual assistant to change the channel or temperature, these things would be learned, and provided instantly and automatically. Customers could then have their own profile for return visits, each time the room learning and adapting to their preferences.

And this is where the true value of in-room AI can provide its values.

For some customers, it may be a short-lived trip. Maybe just one or two days visiting friends or family. However, if they know that your hotel will adapt and learn exactly what it is they need, now you’ve created immediate incentive to go back. That now they know their settings are saved and their next visit, they could truly take advantage of the smart-room technology.

Not to mention the benefit this provides to repeat customers who travel for business. Overall, the ability for rooms to learn, adapt, and save profiles for different visitors is a turning point in hospitality technology. It will go from HBO and tube TV’s, to artificial intelligence catering to your customer’s every whim.
