Lunchtime Dining Segment has Restaurant Industry in a Funk


In the past, the restaurant industry has always been an indicator of where the economy is heading, but according to Total Food Service, the WSJ recently described the industry as "being in a funk", while other areas of the economy are on the rise. If we look to the lunch crowd in recent past, it has experienced new lows that haven't been recorded in 40 years. It is not just the economy we have to take into consideration, but other recent trends, such as increased numbers of people working from home and supermarkets becoming direct restaurant competitors, as well. Restaurants are also struggling to pay a livable wage to their employees, which becomes costly with an empty dining room during lunch hours.
